Challenges for the dairy industry

Today, milk processing companies are facing a variety of challenges. Dairies are typically characterized by a high degree of cost sensitivity, their focus on mass production, the use of innovative packaging and an ever-increasing range of flavors. Animal welfare, climate protection, a shortage of skilled labor and sustainability are some of the other issues affecting the industry.

Dairy products need to be manufactured and processed in a thoughtful manner that helps save essential resources like water and energy. Moreover, dairies face stiff competition from both domestic and international markets, requiring them to offer milk substitutes and plant-based alternatives, with a maximum level of flexibility.

Milk alternatives are all the rage these days, and an increasing number of people are giving up cow's milk in favor of plant-based substitutes, such as soy, oat, almond and pea drinks. Once considered a niche item, they are now hugely popular with many consumers - especially vegans and so-called flexitarians.

Sharply rising input costs – particularly the surge in energy prices – are also a major concern for plant operators. Dairies, with their need for steam to preserve milk and refrigeration for cooling yogurt, stand out as one of the most energy-intensive sectors within the food industry. Careful use of all energy sources is, therefore, of paramount importance.
